For a cheap cover I like letting volunteer wheat grow back along with radish spread/planted in. Radishs can be had for $1-2/lb so your seed cost is pretty low.My last bean year I planted then mid June. My tenant is strip till. So far there's not been any erosion problems (in 7 years) and his planting is very timely because the strips warm and dry early. Cover crops after silage will scavenge any left over nutrients from the corn crop. Some radishes in there will help break up that compaction.
